Cable grabs much deserved victory for Mead

Kentish Observer League Thomas Hawes reports from Park View Road
Erith & Belvedere 1 Dickson 49
Thamesmead Town 2 Williams 48
Cable 77

Erith & Belvedere failed to complete a festive double over Thamesmead Town as they succumbed to an abysmal 2-1 defeat at Park View Road in which both sides failed to prove their promotion credentials, writes Thomas Hawes.

Thamesmead started positively and dominated the opening 25 minutes where they hit the woodwork on two occasions and could quite easily have opened up a comfortable lead.

The Deres began to come into the game towards the end of the first half. An out of sorts Anton Innocent had only the goalkeeper to beat after some good work by Steve White and Chris Dickson, but the ex-Wimbledon striker failed to hit the target for Erith.

With seconds remaining in the first half, White whipped in a sublime cross to the back post to Dickson whose vicious close range shot provoked a superb save by Danny Kemp.

The sides went in level at the break with all to play for in the second half.

Both sides started the second half lively with a goal a piece inside three minutes. Thamesmead's tricky little striker Curtis Williams beat the offside trap to fire home from eight yards and just a minute later, Dickson showed some of his magic as he rounded Danny Kemp and slid the ball into the empty net for the second time in a week.

Thamesmead could have been 2-1 up after just four minutes but Clark Hunt pulled off a good save at the near post.

As the second half wore on, tension grew and it became apparent that the next goal would be the winning one. With fifteen minutes remaining Rick Cable grabbed goal number three against Erith & Belvedere as he waltzed through and coolly guided the ball past a helpless Clark Hunt to grab Thamesmead a very much-deserved victory.

The result leaves both sides one point behind Whitstable Town and the third and final promotion spot.
