Cup chances go West
Beckenham Town arrived late for this Surrey Senior Cup away
tie against Combined Counties Premier league leaders Walton Casuals but got off
to a flying start by going one up within the first 2 minutes.
Nathan Paul managed to win the ball just inside the visitors half then evaded a
wild tackle before out-pacing three Walton defenders to float over an inch
perfect cross to Paul Vines who made no mistake in firing home an unstoppable
shot past the sprawling keeper.
Beckenham should have made taken a further lead when Beszant was put through
only to see his shot well saved by the keeper.
The fast pace of the game and the slippery conditions made it hard for Town to
get their passing game going.
Beckenham continued to make chances against Walton's nervy defence but could not
capitalise.
While at the other end Walton held the ball up well but always tried to be to
certain with their goal attempts and became very predictable.
The tables turned in the 33 minute, when against the run of play Walton made it
one a piece and as if to rub it in they took the lead 2 minutes later from a
looped shot into the far corner.
Two minutes into the second half Beckenham lost Celaire through injury and it
went from bad to worse in the 55 minute when skipper West was shown the red card
for his second bookable defence.
That roused Beckenham who began to push further forward creating more chances
but simply ran out of time and out of the Surrey Senior Cup.
This was not one of Beckenham's better performances and they will have to be far
more determined and disciplined if they are to get back into the form that made
them the Kent league's top scorers for December.
Grant Watts - signed from Ryman League neighbours Bromley - came off the bench
to replace former Cray Wanderers and Thamesmead Town midfielder Adam Heaslewood.
