Lordswood returned to Kent League action after a week's break
and for the first fifteen minutes looked comfortable without looking world
beaters and they also had the first shot of the game when Sam Colyer saw his
shot from outside the penalty area go wide.
Much fancied Herne Bay, had their first chance two minutes
later when a deflected shot from Marc Pollard was pushed away by debutant
Lordswood goalkeeper Steve Williams.
The home side increased the pace of the game and after 19
minutes Robbie Summers cross from the left was headed clear and Pollard struck
the crossbar.
Another chance for Herne Bay came after 21 minutes when Justin
Smale's right wing cross found Summers at the far post and in space but his
effort was blocked by James Day.
Herne Bay scored their three goals in the space of twelve
minutes.
Their first, came in the 31st minute when a free kick on the
left was deflected towards goal by Neil Crust and Pollard on the back post
from one year headed home.
A Steve Williams free kick seven minutes later found Pollard
and from twenty yards passed the ball into the empty net and then Nathan
Eastwood ran onto a long ball into the Lordswood penalty area and scored from
an acute angle.
The second half stated off at a slower pace which suited
Lordswood and after 54 minutes half-time substitute John Gissing, who replaced
Mike Cunningham, crossed to the back post for Colyer who headed wide.
Herne Bay's first chance of the second half came in the 65th
minute when Jason Hughes came out of his goal and passed down the line for
Pollard who got to the by-line and crossed low into the near post and Eastwood
touched the ball wide of the far post.
The only other chance for Lordswood came in the 75th minute.
Grant Gallagher on the right passed inside to Colyer who set up John Gissing
who shot wide from twenty yards.
With seven minutes left on the clock, Steve Weeks and Jamie
Cook tussled for the ball and once the dust settled both players were given
their marching orders.
After six games apiece, Maidstone United and Herne Bay are both
in the top two places with sixteen points each.
