Becks progress in Vase
Lordswood 1-2 Beckenham Town
FA Vase Second Qualifying Round
Saturday 20 September 2003
by Darrell Harman
After last week when Lordswood got back to winning ways confidence was higher and they were looking forward to a run in this season's FA Vase competition.
The game started off slowly as both sides got used to the hot weather and then in the space of two minutes the game came alive with the games opening two goals.
In the 16th minute a Lordswood free kick ten yards outside the penalty area was taken by Steve Weeks who passed to Mike Cunningham running into the area and his cross was cleared but only to Michael Dodsworth who from twenty yards fired home from an acute angle.
Straight from the kick off the ball was played to Mark Colman who from twenty yards beat Piggott in the Lordswood goal.
After 19 minutes Beckenham's Matthew Belton was put through and just as he was about to pull the trigger, David Johnson got back and blocked his shot.
Beckenham almost took the lead after 39 minutes when the ball fell at Colman's feet but his shot was parried around the post by Piggott.
The game followed the pattern of the first half and in the 62nd minute Lordswood created the first chance of the half when Steve Clements midfield pass found Sam Colyer running into the area but his first touch was poor and his shot sailed over the crossbar.
Beckenham's first chance came five minutes later when a ball into the area was punched clear by Piggott under pressure and Colman hooked the ball into an empty net.
With nine minutes remaining Cunnigham took a quick free kick from just outside the penalty area and the goalkeeper was beaten but the ball went agonisingly past the post.
Beckenham could have added to their scoreline after 87 minutes when Paul Smith released Danny WIlson down the left wing and centred for Ricky Spain but from eight yards side footed the ball wide.
