Bowey's brace buckles Cray

Go Travel Kent League side Slade Green produced an impressive performance in their latest pre-season friendly, with a deserved 2-0 victory over Kent League champions and newly promoted to the Isthmian League First Division, Cray Wanderers at The Small Glen on Thursday night, writes Stephen McCartney.

Dean Bowey, who was ironically a summer signing from Cray, hit both goals either side of the interval.  The prolific marksman was unlucky not to grab a hat-trick with an effort that drifted narrowly wide.

However, Bowey's striking partner, Chris Tuley, was also hitting impressive form, and was unlucky not to find the net.

Before their victory over the Wands, however, Slade Green suffered defeat by a solitary goal, for the second time in the space of three days, against higher league opposition.

Narrowly going down 1-0 to local neighbours, Erith & Belvedere on Tuesday night, Slade Green were guilty of squandering a host of chances including a missed penalty from Bowey.

Meanwhile, on the same night, the reserves enjoyed a 3-1 win at Maidstone United.

A brace from Andy Brown and a Jason Elliot strike secured their victory.

Although not present at the first team match, as he was in charge of the second string, Green boss Phil Miles admitted both games proved to be good work-outs.

He said: "I was very pleased with the way the second string conducted themselves against Maidstone United and having spoken to Terry Malin he had similar views on the first team's performance.

"Things seem to be getting into place as we approach our first league game of the season at home to Maidstone United a week on Saturday."
