A club of Dover's size should be aiming to get out of this league, says Daryl McMahon

DOVER ATHLETIC midfielder Daryl McMahon says his club should be aiming to get out of the Blue Square Bet (Conference) South at the end of the season.

McMahon, who has made a positive impression on the pitch since signing from league rivals Eastleigh, said the potential of the club lured him to Crabble.

"I've played against Dover a couple of times and it's a big club. The chairman, manager, players, stadium and fans are all really good,” McMahon told www.doverathletic.com.

The former Leyton Orient and Port Vale player said he is happy playing anywhere in midfield and has settled in well with the rest of the squad: "I like to get as many touches as I can and will go where the ball is! I've played with Ian (Simpemba) and Calum (Willock) before. They are all really good lads here."

McMahon also gave his views on Saturday's trip to strugglers Basingstoke Town, a side that lie in the bottom three on 13 points.

He said: "They are in a false position. I have played against them once already for Eastleigh this season and they have good players. This is a such a tight league and it will be a tough game, but the manager will know their strengths and weaknesses. He always has a game plan and likes to pass information from the sidelines too."

The midfielder, who has for the last 18 months been working full-time at Dagenham and Redbridge's centre of excellence and is also currently undertaking his 'A license' coaching badges, also stated his ambitions for the season ahead.

With Dover Athletic presently sitting in eleventh-place on sixteen-points from eleven games, but only three points adrift of fifth-place, McMahon said: "A club of Dover's size should be aiming to get out of this league. Of course, the result against Salisbury was disappointing, but everyone needs to understand it is only October and the season is far from over.

"We are a better team than the one that lost on Saturday. We have a very good squad of players and if we all work hard, we can go on a good run of wins. With the fans help, we need to make Crabble a fortress so that other teams won't enjoy coming here."
