All we're asking the players is to give us a performance to keep their shirts, says Gerry Cox

GREENWICH BOROUGH joint-manager Gerry Cox says he is starting to build for next season after a good run of form has taken his side off the foot of the Kent Hurlimann Football League table. The club made it 10 points out of fifteen with a deserved 3-2 victory away to Fisher at Champion Hill yesterday and leapfrogged over Deal Town, who are now at the foot of the table.
A hard-fought battle ended goal-less at the break, but Rob Depeaser converted a 48th minute penalty. Diminutive striker Mathieu Ramsamy doubled their lead when the leading goalscorer converted his seventh goal of a difficult season, before Ashley Wright slammed home a third.
Fisher did pull back two goals inside the final seven minutes to add some respectability to the scoreline, through Alex Ball’s first goal for the club and former Greenwich Borough midfielder Adam Wadmore, but Cox’s men held on to seal a morale-boosting victory.
They travel to VCD Athletic next Saturday knowing that Ricky Bennett’s side suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Erith & Belvedere yesterday.
The Crayford based side have slipped down to fourth-place in the Kent Hurlimann Football League table, with 42 points from 21 games, fourteen points adrift of leaders Herne Bay, who now need four wins from their last nine games to seal the title.
“It will be very interesting because they only beat us 1-0 at our place and I thought on that day they were very fortuitous to beat us on that day,” said Cox.
“It’s quite interesting you’ve told me that result (VCD losing to Erith & Belvedere), because we more than acquitted ourselves very well against Erith & Belvedere so we’ll just see.”
When asked what his targets are for their last remaining six league games, Cox replied, “We’ll take each gam now as it comes. We’re looking now to build on next season and just seeing where the next six results will take us because we’ve got some of the big teams left to play.
“I want us to do as well as we possibly can. I’m not going to set any targets or points or anything like that.”
Cox says he is building for next season.
“All we’re asking the players’ is to give us a performance where they keep the shirt for the week after,” he said.
“We’ve got a load of trialists’ in with us at the moment training with us and we need to keep the pressure on the players in the team and they need to know that they need to maintain these standards to keep their shirts.”
However, with the Kent Invicta League coming towards the end of its inaugural campaign, it’s about time that The Football Association introduce promotion and relegation between the two league’s so struggling clubs at the foot of the Kent League have something to play for at this time of the year.
