Anything less than the top five is a backwards step, says Firkins
Firkins has guided the amateur side to third and fifth place in his two years with the club, but he expects even fiercer competition during the season ahead.
"Just looking through the websites there’s a lot of signings, people making big money signings and stuff like that, so we’d like to try and maintain the position we’ve been in over the last two seasons," Firkins told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.
"We finished third in our first season (at the club) and then fifth last year. We’d like to keep that momentum - top six at least. We’re not trying to be big-headed, anything below that will be a backwards step."Looking ahead to the season ahead, the club’s second at Holmesdale’s Oakley Road ground in Bromley, Firkins added: "We probably set ourselves a high target from our first season and to continue in that vein you’ve got to progress. Our main aim is to try and stay within that top five or six, it’s not going to be an easy job without a doubt."
Greenwich Borough, who have been in pre-season training since 8 June, were defeated 4-1 by reprieved Ryman League Division One North side Leyton last weekend.
Borough went in at the break level, courtesy of Bobby Hanley’s goal, but rued their bad-luck as they struck the woodwork on three occasions, although Leyton missed a penalty.Half-time brought the usual changes in team personnel, with Leyton bringing on 11 new players, whilst Firkins made six changes.
Firkins, however, was pleased with the run-out, against higher league opposition."I made six changes and further changes as the game continued and we conceded three goals directly after the changes were made," he said.
"Overall, there were plenty of positives, especially from the first half performance and with two or three players till to come back, the shape of the team looked good.Greenwich Borough welcome Welsh side Cwmbran Celtic to the EDF Sports Ground on Saturday.
Celtic finished runners-up in the second division of the Welsh League last season and Firkins explained how the fixture was arranged."Gerry Cox, our coach, is good friends with their coach as they did their licence together and they’ve remained friends," explained Firkins.
"They came up last year or the year before and he looked after them and he made a phone call and they said they’re more than happy come up and play us."We’ve laid on some food for them and we’ll have a drink with them and make it a day with them.
"It’s an unusual (team to play in a pre-season friendly) but it’s something different, we’ll have to learn a bit of Welsh!"Greenwich Borough v Cwmbran Celtic
