Ashford Town 0-1 Tilbury - I'm disappointed that we're out, says Lovell

ASHFORD TOWN 0-1 TILBURY
Championship Manager Cup Second Round
Wednesday 18th November 2009
Mike Green reports from Homelands Stadium

HOLDERS Tilbury eased into the third round of the Championship Manager League Cup with a straight forward win over Ashford Town at Homelands.

Despite having lots of possession, Steve Lovell's side struggled in front of goal, and although Nick Smith did hit the bar in the opening 10 minutes for the home side, it was Ashford keeper Darren Ibrahim who was far the busier of the two keepers.  Afterwards when talking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk manager Lovell was open about his sides performance.

"It could have gone either way," he said.  "We had the better of the first half, they had the better of the second.  What was important tonight was that we played after Saturday's game was called off, and we got our legs back for Saturday's trip to Burgess Hill, but at the end of the day they took their chance when it came and we didn't."

And in a nutshell that last comment summed up the game perfectly, although until Lee Hodges scored the only goal of the game just past the hour mark, Homelands smallest crowd for some years were wondering if there was going to be a goal in the contest.

In the opening 90 seconds, Smith crossed for Mark Lovell who's first time flick at goal was well gathered by Tilbury keeper Andy Hall, and it was Smith who went even closer on 7 minutes - the left winger cut inside and hit a dipping shot that clipped the bar on its way over.

The visitors should have been in front on 11 minutes when Bradley Barnes sliced horribly wide from three yards out, before on 28 minutes the Ashford goal again bore a charmed life.

Nathan Gordon crossed from the left and whilst trying to clear Steve Springett only succeeded in slicing his clearance straight at a bemused Ibrahim in the Ashford goal.

"Fortunately" for Ibrahim he knew little about it as the ball cannoned off his chest before rebounding to safety.

Moments later Kayan Kalipha headed wide when you thought it easier to score, and you began to think that maybe it was going to be Ashford's night.

The first real action of the second half though proved it was not going to be however, as on 62 minutes Tilbury scored the games only goal.

The ball was whipped in from the right, and Gordon instinctively flicked the ball goalwards for substitute Hodges to prod the ball home from six yards.

Hodges almost turned provider moments later as a fine cut back found Kalipha who this time was denied by a stunning one hand save from Ibrahim, who the sprung to his feet to clear the resulting cross back into his box to kick the ball away - not bad for a keeper struggling with a groin strain!

Mark Lovell had the home side’s best chance in the time remaining, but after a poor first touch his second send the ball into the Car Park.

"Mark just needs the ball to hit his backside and go in at the moment," the manager admitted afterwards.  "he's admitted to the players that as he controlled the ball, he got a rush that comes when you haven't scored for a while - I should know," grinned Lovell senior!  "He's almost back to full fitness and I'm sure that the goals will come - but they just didn't tonight!  “What did please me tonight was the performance of young defender Laurence Harvey.  Games like this give me a chance to look at players like him in match situations and he didn't disappoint."

"I'm disappointed that we're out," the manager concluded, "but I'm pleased with the way we played and that we did play at all ahead of an important game at the weekend!"
