I’m sure again we’ll see the big spenders up there. I also think there may be one or two surprises. As for ourselves, we have our own targets and beliefs which I’m very confident we can achieve, says Bearsted boss Kevin Stevens
BEARSTED manager Kevin Stevens says there may be one or two surprises in the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division this season.
The Bears welcome Glebe to Honey Lane on the opening day of the 2021-22 season tomorrow.
The Chislehurst-based outfit have appointed former Croydon and Whyteleafe boss Harry Hudson and they are expected to be challenging for the title, along with Chatham Town, Sheppey United and Tunbridge Wells.
“It’s been a tough 18 months or so for so many people, but we can’t wait for the season to get started and give us all something to focus on. I know myself, my management team and the whole squad will appreciate this coming season more than ever,” said Stevens.
“The buzz around our group has been so good since week one. It’s probably the hardest we’ve pushed the boys during a pre-season. Hopefully, that will help us as the season progresses.
“We picked a hard pre-season schedule to really test the squad and that’s gone really well. Obviously, there are always some hiccups along the way, but the boys have learned and improved every time we’ve asked a question of them.”
Stevens has added eight new faces in the areas that he felt needed improving.
“The boys that have come in have been really good additions and they’ve added a bit more quality to the squad but importantly are the right characters I want at the club,” said the manager.
“Along with our existing boys I think we have a better balance this season as well as more strength in depth.”
Looking ahead to their opening test against the Foxes, Stevens said: “It’s a tough start. With the changes at Glebe, I would expect them to have a very good season. That said, every game in this league is a tough game. As always we will be as prepared as we can be.
“The boys are really looking forward to the game and can’t wait to get going.
"I’m sure again we’ll see the big spenders up there. I also think there may be one or two surprises. As for ourselves, we have our own targets and beliefs which I’m very confident we can achieve.
“Games are coming thick and fast with another tough game on Tuesday night at home to Crowborough Athletic, followed by an away trip in The FA Cup to Banstead Athletic next Saturday and we’re really looking forward to that one.
“It’s a different challenge playing a team from another league. We will do our homework on them and hopefully progress to the next round.”
The Bearsted manager finished the interview by saying: “Thanks for the continued great work you do with the website.”
