We need to improve our position in the league and put pressure on others around us, says Beckenham Town coach Billy Walton
BECKENHAM TOWN coach Billy Walton says his players travel to Corinthian tomorrow in a good mood after ending a miserable run of defeats.
Beckenham Town are involved in a relegation dog-fight and they arrive at Gay Dawn Farm in the bottom two in the Southern Counties East Football League table with 13 points from 23 games. They are a point better off than Fisher and five adrift of the side immediately above them, Erith Town.
Michael Golding’s Corinthian, meanwhile, are in eleventh-place in the league table with 26 points from 19 games and have games in hand on all teams above them but have lost their last three run-outs.
“We are very much looking forward to our visit to Corinthian, you always get a warm welcome there and it is a good place to play your football on what is normally a very good playing surface,” said Walton, who prepares the side for his seventh game since joining the club.
“I am looking forward to meeting Michael Golding, as he once played for me at Greenwich Borough and is a good man and is doing a fantastic job.”
Beckenham stopped a depressing run of 13 straight defeats by coming away from Cray Valley with a point in a 3-3 draw last weekend – but it should have been more.
Walton said: “We go there in good mood after last week’s good performance in which I thought we could have won the game if we had not had to make a substitution due to injury, which affected our shape and was leading 3-1 at the time.
“It was the first time we’ve had a near full-strength side out in my time here.”
Beckenham Town have enticed versatile player Adam Allen back from league rivals Croydon this week.
“We are bringing in new players all the time which will improve us. I hope over the next two or three weeks and hope to get some back of the injured ones too,” said Walton.
“As for Corinthian tomorrow, they do not hold no surprises for us as they will always try to play football the right way and Michael knows we will too.
“It should be a very good football match but we need to win football matches which will improve our position in the league and put pressure on others around us, which I think we will do, hopefully by staring with a win tomorrow.”
