I blame myself for our defeat at Deal, admits Beckenham Town coach Billy Walton

BECKENHAM TOWN coach Billy Walton admits he is to blame for their 2-0 defeat at Deal Town yesterday.

The Becks lost top spot in the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division after Derek Hares side snatched the victory through Sam Wilson and Dan Adams’ penalty.  The score was 0-0 in the 87^th minute of the game at Charles Sports Ground.

“Reflecting on the game yesterday, it was an extremely poor from both teams but we still created enough chances to score two or three goals,” said Walton.

“Deal do what Deal do best, they battled extremely hard.

“I blame myself for part of the result as in the 88^th minute we were still trying to win the game and left ourselves open to the counter-attack, which Deal did exactly that.

“We should have defended properly and see the game out and took a point, which both side’s deserved.”

Beckenham Town have slipped down to third in the table on six points as Canterbury City now lead the Premier Division on nine points, followed by Corinthian, who also have a 100% record from their three league outings.

Beckenham Town host Erith Town to Eden Park Avenue on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon.

The Dockers have lost both of their league outings to Canterbury City (3-1) and Glebe (2-1), but have saved their best form for The FA Cup.

They needed two games to see-off league rivals Rochester United and stunned Bostik South side Whytleafe 4-1 on penalties after an epic FA Cup tie finished 3-3 after extra time last Wednesday.

That game hit the national headlines as four penalties were scored in seven minutes towards the end of the first half.

“Looking forward to our game against Erith Town on Monday,” said Walton, who played a major part in keeping the club in the Premier Division, as Fisher and Erith & Belvedere suffered relegation and held each other to a goal-less draw at Park View Road yesterday.

“We have two key players back for that game, which we did not have for the Deal game and I’m sure they will make a big difference to our side.

“Erith are a very well-organised team and they get plenty of players behind the ball and are very difficult to break down, so we need to be at our best when we play them and keep the ball better, pass the ball better and quicker than we did at Deal.

“We’ve had a mixed start to the season in terms of the way we play.  We played extremely well against Glebe.  Hollands & Blair was a mixed performance and against Deal was poor so tomorrow, hopefully, we will get one of the better performances in but all in all not a bad start to the season.”
