Beckenham Town 2-1 Greenwich Borough

It was two debuts and three points at Eden Park Avenue on Saturday as Beckenham Town stood their ground against a lively Greenwich Borough side, writes Ian Muir.

The visitors made a whirlwind start pushing the ball around well without creating many chances.

Beckenham Town were content to build from the back and after 20 minutes of the contest began to get on top and started playing some entertaining football.

The patient build up paid off in the 31st minute when Awuah smashed home from an inch perfect cross.

From then on Greenwich looked a bit jaded but continued to push forward and Beckenham Town had to be at their best to contain the trickery of both wingers. Going into the break Beckenham were pushing for a second.

Beckenham Town were playing well, following instructions to move the ball early and not dwell on it too long as they had in the first half.

As the tactics started to work the visitors fought hard to get back into the game. They were unlucky not to equalise but Lewington stood firm in goal.

A minute later the stretching Curran could not get his head to the ball as a cross-whistled past.

Beckenham Town were on top and creating chances while the visitors continued to play pretty football without any dividends.

In the 75th minute a free kick was given to the home side on the edge of the area, Collier and Turner stood over the ball while the ref moved the visitors’ wall back.

Turner’s curling free kick found the top corner to send the home side into a deserved two-goal lead.

Five minutes later Beckenham should have been awarded a penalty when Awuah went down in the box after a heavy challenge, controversy followed when the ref waved play on then stopped to consult his linesman who had kept his flag up. No further action was taken.

Two minutes before the end Greenwich pounced on poor back pass and Uddin fired home.

Beckenham deserved the three points after putting on what could be described as a professional performance.

Jason Huntley gave debuts to former player Danny Beszant and John Paul Collier who both slotted in well in key areas.

Erith Town welcome Beckenham Town to the Erith Sports Stadium next Saturday, whilst Borough welcome strugglers Tunbridge Wells.
