BROMLEY manager Mark Goldberg described Dean Santangelo’s goalkeeping as “reckless” after he gifted Woking three of their four goals at Hayes Lane tonight.
Santangelo, 17, who is on work-experience from Championship club Reading, played his ninth game for the Kent club, but he endured a miserable time against Woking, as he can be blamed for Woking’s first three goals.
Goldberg, who made three chances to the team that suffered a 4-1 defeat at Staines Town at the weekend, hinted that he could draft in his third goalkeeper of the season in time for the home league game against Welling United on Saturday.
Bromley stunned Woking by taking the lead within the opening five minutes as target-man Hakeem Araba punished a miss-directed back pass to slot the ball into an empty net.
However, Bromley’s resilience was broken in the 37th minute when striker Moses Ademola’s sweet low shot beat Santangelo at his near post.
Santangelo came rushing out of his goal and was beaten by Wayne Gray early in the second half, but Goldberg made a triple substitution and Leon McKenzie’s sublime chip restored parity in the 67th minute as Bromley grabbed an equaliser with their second shot on target.
Any chance of the Lillywhites getting anything from the game went, when their teenage keeper pulled off a comical blunder to gift Ademola his second with eleven minutes remaining, before substitute Elvis Hammond sealed a fourth late on.
Goldberg, who held a post-match inquest with his coaching staff inside the dressing room for around 30 minutes after the game, said he was very disappointed with the final outcome as he felt his battling side deserved more.
He said: “I thought we were very much in the game, throughout the game other than the last ten minutes.
“I’m very disappointed, having gone 1-0 up and being so resilient in the first half to conceded the goal that we conceded and went in at half-time still with belief that we could impose ourselves and even get all three points.
“Again, it was one of those that immediately we really destroyed our own opportunity by the fact we gave away such a reckless goal and it is down to, unfortunately, inexperience right at the back there.
“We’ve got an seventeen-year-old goalkeeper whose done ever so well for us and even tonight he’s pulled a couple of very good saves but at this level of football and playing against stiffer opposition in the end this counted and at the end this was the difference between the two sides.”
Goldberg added: “We got ourselves back into the game. I made a couple of substitutions, we clawed our way back in. We very nearly scored a third straight after that and we would’ve gone 3-2 up and the game could’ve been different and I very much thought with fifteen minutes to go we were capable of getting all three points, but unfortunately a reckless, how can I put it, the way our goalkeeper came out. I think it’s fair to say the ball span and it was difficult for him but again it’s just youthfulness and unfortunately a lack of experience that cost us the third goal again and as we were going forward to try to get ourselves back into the game, you can always be vulnerable and the fourth came through that vulnerability of us going a little gun-ho to get ourselves back into the game.”
With Welling United slipping up to a surprise 2-1 away defeat to Boreham Wood last night, Woking needed the victory to leapfrog over Jamie Day’s side to reach the summit.
But Bromley opened the scoring inside the opening five minutes, courtesy of a mistake from Woking left-back Derek Duncan and Araba’s willingness to chase.
Salifou Ibrahima played the ball from the middle of the park down the right channel for the target man to chase and former Ebbsfleet United defender Duncan played a low miss-placed pass well wide of his goalkeeper Andy Little and Araba accepted the gift by slotting a right-footed shot into an empty goal from sixteen-yards.
Goldberg said: “It was good chasing down, wasn’t it? A good ball into a channel and we chased it down. It was a bad back pass and he made the most of it.”
Woking began the game at a low tempo, with Bromley’s defence resilient, but Santangelo made a couple of fine saves within 56 seconds of each other.
Right-back Ugo Udoji (who later left the field to insert a new contact lense) lost possession to Paris Cowan-Hall as he attempted to shepherd the ball out of play, and Cowan-Hall cut the resulting free-kick back to Dale Binns, who swept a left-footed shot towards the far post, but Santangelo palmed the ball away.
The keeper then made a low save to thwart Ademola from six-yards after the striker was played in by Jack King in the nineteenth minute.
The Bromley keeper misjudged a high, hanging corner from Duncan from the right flank, but was relieved when Cowan-Hall nodded wide of the near post from a tight angle.
But Woking broke Bromley’s resilience when they drew level in the 37th minute.
The ball was played down the right channel and Ademola produced a classy finish, drilling a left-footed shot into the bottom near corner from sixteen-yards as Santangelo struggled to get across his goal in time.
But the Bromley keeper dived to his left on the stroke of half-time to prevent King from scoring with a right-footed free-kick from thirty-yards.
Bromley fell asleep straight from the kick-off and was lucky that Ademola didn’t tuck the chance away, Santangelo coming off his line to block with his legs, before Woking punished poor goalkeeping in the 48th minute.
King burst down the left and Santangelo haplessly came rushing off his line again and failed to deal with the loose ball and allowed Wayne Gray to roll a left-footed shot apologetically into the bottom left-hand corner.
Araba terrorised the Woking defence as Bromley hit a shot off-target when former Greenwich Borough midfielder Michael Jones saw an opening and sent a low left-footed shot flashing wide from 22-yards.
Goldberg replaced Tutu Henriques, Araba and Jones to bring on Harry Harding (central midfield, Gareth Williams (striker) and Orlando Smith (left flank) and clinical Bromley were level in the 67th minute.
Liam Harwood released McKenzie down the left channel and Woking keeper Andy Little advanced but the striker sent a right-footed chip over his head and into the far corner of an empty net to open his account for the season.
Goldberg said: “What you’re trying to say is we only had two shots on goal but that is not really the reflection of the game. I think it’s fair to say other than the last ten minutes we were very much in the game and I think we took our chances well, but we had an excellent chance straight after we scored our second goal to go 3-2 up, which went wide.”
At this stage of proceedings and for their sheer determination, Bromley deserved to collect at least a point, but Woking upped their game during the final twenty minutes.
Binns made progress down the left and cut the ball back for Cowan-Hall (who also had a goal chalked off for offside before Bromley’s equaliser) to sweep a left-footed shot just past the foot of the near post.
Santangelo was lucky when his clearance ricochet off Ademola who must have been a few yards away and the ball spun just past the near post.
But Bromley squandered an excellent chance to grab a 75th minute lead.
Williams capitalised on a mistake from Joe McNerney inside the Woking penalty area and instead of unleashing a shot towards goal, he opted to spread the ball across the penalty area and Danny Waldren drove a low angled shot across the face of goal and past the far post.
Woking’s third goal (in the 79th minute) was simply embarrassing!
Woking substitute Giuseppe Sole’s spun a low ball into the penalty area and instead of comfortably collecting the ball, Santangelo failed to do so and Ademola pounced on to the loose ball and slammed a low shot into an empty net.
Woking sealed the victory with four minutes remaining when Hammond’s initial shot was blocked by Santangelo, Ademola’s shot was cleared off the line by Harwood and Hammond steered the ball over the line.
Goldberg added: “I don’t think it was a true reflection of the game. Their manager (Garry Hill) would also say with fifteen minutes to go that he was nervous that we (Bromley) could’ve got all three points but at the end of it, it looked like a very comfortable victory for them and I’m sure he would’ve thought so.”
The Bromley boss admitted his side cannot continue to ship in goals and hinted that he will draft in his third goalkeeper in time of their eleventh game of the season.
“Well, I thought our aim was to be resilient and not to concede,” said Goldberg.
“There again, we concede four so I’ve got to look at what we’ve got in the squad and I think it’s fair to say that our goalkeeper is very young and he’s done extremely well for us but it’s very important to have a proper spine and I think it’s fair to say I’ve got a lot of thinking to do this week.”
When asked whether he’s thinking of bringing a more experienced goalkeeper to Hayes Lane, Goldberg, whose side have leaked 20 goals in ten games, replied, “I’ve got to make a decision on having digested it rather than straight after a game but the truth is we have now experienced a number of goals conceded far more goals that we should’ve at this stage of the season so it’s certainly can’t all be down to a goalkeeper. It would help us if we have experience behind our spine.
“We will have to consider our position and consider our options.”
