Budget cut will have an affect on players staying, says Welling United boss Jamie Day

WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day understands that he will be working with a reduced playing budget next season, writes Stephen McCartney.

The club confirmed last night that it has cleared the petition debt with HMRC and has received confirmation via its solicitors that HMRC have agreed to seek dismissal of the Winding Up Petition that the club was due to defend today.

A club statement, issued on www.wellingunited.com said, “The club wishes to express its gratitude to all of those who have worked towards this successful conclusion not least of which was the contribution of its supporters.

“Now seems an opportune time for all to refocus and start building for a more successful season, both on and off the field.”

Day, 31, and his coaching staff of Barry Ashby, Dean Frost and Stacey Beckham, worked a miracle last season, but the Wings just fell short of the play-off’s by one point and had to settle for sixth place in Blue Square Bet South last season.

Day, who joined Welling United from Dartford in November 2009, revealed his budget for next season has been cut.

“It’s pleasing going into the new season with all the tax bills being up to date and everyone involved with the club must be happy,” he said.

“There has been a budget cut for next season as we look to not over spend, which of course will have an affect on players staying.”

Seven days ago, Day confirmed that skipper Jack Parkinson, defender Anthony Acheampong and strikers Andy Pugh, 22, and Luis Cumbers, 22, have all signed new deals for next season.

Today he confirmed that Peterborough based midfielder, Lee Clarke, 27, who bagged fifteen goals last season and scooped the supporters’ player-of-the-season award, has also re-signed.

Day, who is operating on a rolling non-contract, confirmed that he is “hopefully completing” the re-signings of Jack Obersteller, 22, and Loick Pires, 21, this week.

Full-back Obersteller came second in the supporters’ player-of-the-season vote and attacker Pires picked up the Goal of the Season award for his 30-yard spectacular volley against Bishop’s Stortford.

Ashby, Frost and Beckham, meanwhile, are staying at the Park View Road club on non-contract terms.
