Canterbury City boss Ben Smith: We will go into the Westfield game as clear underdogs but we’ve got to embrace it and cause an upset, we are certainly more than capable of it

CANTERBURY CITY boss Ben Smith is preparing his side for one of the toughest draws in The FA Vase Second Round.

Canterbury travel to Woking to tackle Westfield, the Combined Counties League Premier Division leaders that have won 13 and drawn one of their 15 league games.

“Tough, tough game isn’t it? If you look at the record they have this season.  I’ve seen somewhere they are one of the highest scoring sides at Step Five across the country so it’s arguably the toughest draw we could have got,” said Smith.

“We will go into the game as clear underdogs but we’ve got to embrace it and cause an upset, we are certainly more than capable of it.

“We’ve shown good character in the previous rounds and that’s exactly what we will need to replicate.

“The FA Vase games have been a welcome distraction from the League this season and has helped us get over some disappointing results but our performances have picked up recently and we are now beginning to have a consistent suad so we hope this game can really improve the belief and momentum we are building.

“We had a training game with Maidstone United in the week which was ideal preparation for such a tough fixture tomorrow.”

Canterbury City go into the game sitting in eleventh-place in the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division table with 19 points from 14 games but they are on a five-match unbeaten run, although Westfield have won their last seven games and have scored 59 league goals.
