Canterbury City boss Ben Smith: I think Kent club’s will do well in The FA Vase this season as it’s the strongest I’ve known the League for a long time so hopefully with a bit of luck we can be one of those to kick on

CANTERBURY CITY manager Ben Smith says he wants to go far in The FA Vase this season.

The Deal based club came away from Lydd Town with a 3-0 win in the Kent Reliance Senior Trophy last weekend and play another First Division side in K Sports tomorrow.

“I’m Pleased to progress further in the Kent Senior Trophy down at Lydd, which was a potential banana skin,” said Smith, who’s side are in eleventh-place in the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division table.

“I know they had a few players out and that gave us more opportunity to rotate our side and I guess that didn’t make for the greatest game in the world.

“However, our new signing from Faversham Town, Sam Lawford showed what he is about, bagging two goals and we were able to give 16-year-old Ryan Aldritt his senior debut, so some real positives to take from it.”

K Sports are based in Aylesford and are playing in The FA Vase for the first time in their history this season.

Kris Browning’s side are top of the First Division table and Smith knows his side must perform if they are to progress.

“Next up it’s another side from that League and we certainly won’t take a win for granted as they are a decent side from what I have seen of them,” said Smith.

“If we take liberties then we will go out of the competition. I’m looking for my team to be more ruthless as that’s really holding us back so far this season but we’ve got quality in the side so we’ll back them to deliver and get our season going again.

“We’ve stuttered in the League of late so it’s been a welcome break with these cup competitions.

“I’ve said previously that I think Kent club’s will do well in The FA Vase this season as it’s the strongest I’ve known the League for a long time so hopefully with a bit of luck we can be one of those to kick on.”
