Canterbury City chairman plots promotion into Kent League

Thursday 23rd December 2010
CANTERBURY CITY council announced yesterday that discussions between the Council, Canterbury City FC and Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys about the School hosting a community football hub have ended without agreement.

Canterbury City Football Club chairman Tim Clark issued the following statement on the club’s official website www.canterburycityfc.org: “Whilst it is of course disappointing that no agreement could be reached, the Club are encouraged by the Council’s Chief Executive Colin Carmichael’s confirmation, that the Council is now in further discussion with the Club on moving the project forward.”

Mr Clark added: “Although I do not feel it would be appropriate for me to comment on the detail of the discussions that took place, what I can say is that after full consultation the option of hosting the home ground of Canterbury City Football Club at the school, as part of the overall community football hub concept, appeared to give rise to certain ground grading issues and sustainability of the site as a longer term solution for the Club as it progresses up the football pyramid.

“The exercise has been encouraging from the Club's point of view in that there does appear to be genuine support for what the Club is about and, as a Community Interest Club, the wider community work we undertake, as well as wanting to see Canterbury once again with an established football club. I feel that there is now renewed determination for the project as we move into 2011.”

Mr Clark also confirmed, “That the Club had formerly applied to the FA for promotion to the Kent Premier League next season. That would see our 1st team playing Step 5 football, in only four seasons a jump from Step 9. A real achievement by any standards that not only those at the Club can be proud of but the City as well.”

Mr Clark further confirmed that the Club’s Youth and Learning Disabilities Teams would continue to enjoy use of the Langton School facilities.

The Vandanel Kent County League Premier Club will provide further updates on the Football Hub project as and when it can.
