Cass: It was a big surprise when Folkestone came in for me

Monday 08th March 2010
On Thursday of last week, Brendon Cass left Chatham Town to sign for Folkestone Invicta in a move that has taken many people by surprise, writes Mike Green.

As Brendon says his goodbye to Chatham Town for a second time, he tells us in his own words how the move came about and his hopes to take Folkestone into the Ryman Premier League.

“It was a big surprise when Folkestone came in for me, it really was!” Cass told Chatham Town's match day programme.

“I spoke to Neil Cugley at the start of the season about possibly going down there, but decided to go instead with OB and Lew (Alex O’Brien and Lew Watts), who I know very well from playing with both of them, and I wanted to sign for Chatham to try and get them promotion.

“But over the last few weeks its become clear that that isn’t going to happen and I’ve become more and more frustrated as I know a lot of the fans have too.

“I feel that I have to do what’s best for me at the moment and I must thank Alex for being so supportive, but I think that the time is right for me to move on and hopefully I can got to Cheriton Road and hopefully help them to win the league!”

Moving on though was a tough decision for Brendon as he then explained.  “I had to think long and hard about leaving Maidstone Road as if I’m honest Alex and Lew were a big part of the reason that I signed for Chatham,” he said.

“I’ve got all the time in the world for both of them – they’re great guys!  I wanted to do well and I do think that by leaving now I’ve left on a bit of a downer, but it’s too good a chance to me to turn down.  But I did have to think long and hard because it’s my local club and I wanted to do well.

“There are some really good players in there but over the last couple of months things haven’t worked out and the season seems to be tailing off but that’s football and we move on!”

Some people will be surprised that given Folkestone’s well documented off field problems they can be in a position to make such a signing.  That’s not something that bothered the prolific striker.

“I don’t know what’s happening off the field with Folkestone with their financial problems but Neil has assured me that they’ve turned a corner, so therefore I’m happy that if they’re in apposition that they want to sign me to help them push on then I can only be pleased,” said Cass.

“They play with wings backs and are an attacking team although Neil has said on a number of occasions recently that they’re not scoring enough goals – hopefully I can go down there and help them out. But I’m looking forward to playing with arguably some of the best players in the league!”

For those he leaves behind in Medway, Brendon had this message, “I’m sure that there will be a lot of disappointed people at Maidstone Road and I’m disappointed to leave Chatham where the team has done OK, and its just our inconsistency really that has stopped us going onto challenge.

“I left Chatham early before to go to Dartford and I really wanted to give it a go this time, but as I’ve already said – that’s football and sometimes it doesn’t work out, and you have to move on and try and better yourself and hopefully I can do that at Folkestone.”

“OB released me on Thursday and I signed the paperwork to play at the weekend, and am already looking forward to seeing my “old” team mates on Easter Monday.

“The move has happened so fast that I haven’t had a chance to say a proper good bye to the rest of the players or anyone else associated with the club…  but I would just like to wish everyone at Chatham – O’B and Lew and all the rest of the boys – all the very best of luck for the future!”

Cass took 41 minutes to score on his Folkestone Invicta debut at the weekend – a 1-0 win at Metropolitan Police that keeps Cugley’s side at the top of the Ryman League Division One South table.
