Cassius is too good for the Kent League, says O'Boyle

Thursday 26th March 2009

ERITH TOWN boss Steve O’Boyle says teenage striker Marcus Cassius has a bright future in the game and expects him to leave the club at the end of the season, writes Stephen McCartney.

The 19-year-old contracted striker has banged in 40 goals this season, including FIVE hat-tricks and O’Boyle expects to lose him to higher league clubs once his contract expires at the end of the current campaign.

The Bulmers Cider Kent League Cup finalists will, however, sit down with the prolific marksman to discuss new terms but clubs are already taking notice of Kent’s leading goalscorer.

“He had a quiet game tonight, I think he had a little knock and a dead leg, but people say were a one-man team - never!,” said O’Boyle, when speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk, following last night’s emphatic 4-1 win over leaders Hythe Town to reach the final, where they meet Croydon at Folkestone Invicta’s Cheriton Road on Saturday, 4th May.

“All the boys stood up to their platform tonight and delivered.”

O’Boyle added, “Marcus is a great player, but there are some other good players at this club.

“I honestly believe he’s too good for the Kent League. He’s an outstanding talent, he’s young, he’s got pace, he scores goals and I think it’s only a matter of time when a big local club comes in for him.”

The holders booked their place in this season’s final, having fought back from a 3-1 first leg deficit to stun Hythe 4-1 on the night, winning the tie 5-4 on aggregate, after extra time.

O’Boyle’s men face six league games before their final showdown with Croydon, who thumped Faversham Town 6-0 on aggregate.

Currently in fourth place with 47 points, ten points behind Hythe Town, O’Boyle is confident that his side will meet expectations.

“I still say our main target was 52 points, one more than last year, that’s still our target,” he said.

“Herne Bay on Saturday, obviously we’ve got to turn up and hopefully get another win under our belts and maybe we can get third place, but I still say top five I’d be happy with.”
