Chairman McCarthy quits Beckenham Town
BECKENHAM TOWN chairman Chris McCarthy says a personality clash with the long-serving secretary is one of the reasons that has sparked his resignation, writes Stephen McCartney.
Mr McCarthy was at the helm at the Eden Park Avenue club for 18 months and was also a part of Jason Huntley’s management team.
He revealed that he had cleared the club’s debts last summer, which could have shut down the club, and Huntley guided the club to fourth place in the Kent League, after finishing third-from-bottom (fifteenth place) the previous season.
Mr McCarthy certainly put Beckenham Town back on the map with a publicity stunt that certainly caused a stir both locally and nationally, insisting that he had signed former Millwall, England and Manchester United striker, Teddy Sheringham, to play in the club’s FA Vase ties last season.
Despite secretary, Peter Palmer being photographed with a signed Kent League form, Sheringham failed to play for the club in a competitive fixture, although he did play at Eden Park Avenue last summer, scoring a hat-trick in a charity game.
Mr McCarthy explained to www.kentishfootball.co.uk his reasons for parting company with the club."There are two reasons," he said. "First I have some personal problems that I need to focus my attention on over the next few months.
"The second reason is I have found it very hard and frustrating working with Peter Palmer."
He added: "I will still go to some games, but as a supporter. I wish all at Beckenham all the success for the future."
