Charlton Athletic axe Russell Slade after 21 games: The club wants to give itself the best possible opportunity of achieving its number one priority – winning promotion to the Sky Bet Championship at the earliest opportunity

CHARLTON ATHLETIC have today parted company with manager Russell Slade.

The club axed the 56-year-old former Cardiff City and Leyton Orient boss after only 21 games in charge at The Valley.

Charlton Athletic suffered relegation from the Championship at the end of last season and Slade leaves the club sitting in 15th place in League One after Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Swindon Town.

Slade has guided Charlton Athletic to five wins, 10 draws and 10 defeats in all competitions during his short reign in charge.

A club statement, which was posted on www.cafc.co.uk said: “The club has reluctantly made this decision after results this season, which have left the team occupying 15th place. The club wants to give itself the best possible opportunity of achieving its number one priority – winning promotion to the Sky Bet Championship at the earliest opportunity.

“The club would like to thank Russell for his tireless work during his time at The Valley, particularly the processes and disciplines he has instilled at the training ground, and wishes him well for the future.

“The club will make no further comment until a new manager has been appointed.”

Charlton Athletic are only six points adrift of sixth-placed Bristol Rovers – who occupy the final play-off berth – and three points clear of the relegation zone in a tight League One table.

Slade was the sixth manager that has been in charge of the club since January 2011, following Chris Powell, Jose Riga, Bob Peeters, Guy Luzon, Karel Fraeye and Riga (second spell) out of the revolving door in SE7.
