Chatham Town boss Kevin Watson brings in Jon Pilbeam from Tunbridge Wells

CHATHAM TOWN manager Kevin Watson has unveiled his first summer signing, and has re-signed two of last season’s squad, writes Stephen McCartney.

Winger, Jon Pilbeam, 21, has arrived from Kent League side Tunbridge Wells, whilst Watson has agreed terms to keep midfielder Brad Potter and goalkeeper Adam Malloy at Maidstone Road.

Pilbeam, who came through the academies at Charlton Athletic and Chelsea, is an exciting young prospect, previously with Tonbridge Angels, before excelling at Tunbridge Wells last season, where he scored 11 goals in 38 appearances, providing the ammunition for strikers Keelan Mooney (who scored 19 goals) and 22-goal leading goalscorer, Carl Cornell.

Mooney has already secured a move to Ryman League Division One South Whitstable Town.

Newly appointed assistant manager, Keith Levett, was impressed with Pilbeam during his one season in charge of Sevenoaks Town last season.

“Jon is a player who was recommended by Keith,” Watson told www.chathamtownfc.net a couple of days ago.

“Jon had an outstanding season last year with Tunbridge Wells and his attacking wing play impressed all last season, scoring 11 goals.

“For a young lad, Jon has great physical presence and is excited about the prospect of playing at this level.”

Despite finishing second-from-bottom in Ryman League Division One South last season, Chatham Town avoided the drop into the Kent League and have been switched to join Thamesmead Town in Ryman League Division One North.

Influential midfielder Potter has agreed terms after receiving the manager’s player-of-the-year award last season.

The former Dartford player will also undertake the role of club captain.

“Brad epitomises Chatham Town and the ambition of the club,” said Watson.

“He had another great season, and his consistency is a manger’s dream.

“Several clubs were interested in signing Brad and I am delighted that he has agreed to stay.

“He displays all the attributes required by a club captain and will play an important role next season.”

After a succession of impressive performances in goal last season, Watson has picked Malloy as his number one.

He said: “Adam has grown from strength to strength and displays the confidence and enthusiasm to make his mark at this level.

“He continually strives to improve his game and was an important component in the successful results we experienced at the end of the season.”
