Chatham Town unveil O'Brien as their new boss

Monday 18th May 2009
CHATHAM TOWN chairman Jeff Talbot unveiled a shock new management team at the club’s well supported presentation night on Friday evening, writes Stephen McCartney.

Former Dartford skipper, Alex O’Brien, who spent a loan spell with Chatham last season, has been appointed manager, and he will be assisted by the vastly experienced Lew Watts, who played for Chats’ Ryman League Division One North rivals Thamesmead Town last term.

Before announcing the new duo at the club’s presentation night at the club’s Maidstone Road ground on Friday night, Mr Talbot paid tribute to both Steve Binks and Steve Best for setting the foundations of a squad that had ended their campaign with a fantastic 12 match unbeaten run.

Binks also paid a passionate tribute to Best for his professionalism and long-term support for the Medway club.

“Steve Best was a role model for younger aspiring footballers to follow,” Binks told www.chathamtownfc.net.

Chatham stalwart Binks will move to a new role of director of football where the club will continue to benefit from his experience.

Richard Avery (managers player-of-the-year), Matt Solly (players’ player-of-the-year), Lee Barnett (supporters’ players-of-the-year), Robert Reardon (reserves manager player-of-the-year), Matt Rowe (reserves player-of-the-year) and Michael Scott (youth player-of-the-year) were the precipitants of the player awards.
