Cobbs serves suspension for trip to league leaders

Tuesday 06th January 2009

WELLING UNITED boss Andy Ford says his star striker Charlie Sheringham has a bright future in the game, writes Stephen McCartney.

Sheringham has scored 16 goals for the Blue Square South side this season and in his last two games, two of his three goals against local rivals Bromley, were quality strikes.

But Ford, speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk, following their 3-1 win over Bromley at Park View Road on New Year’s Day, says he has other players that can also make the grade.

“At the end of the day, I wouldn’t stand in anybody’s way to go and improve themselves,” said Ford.

“It’s not only Charlie to be honest, there’s a team out there and some other players coming into form at the moment, that could easily play at a higher level.”

Ford takes his side to Unibond Premier League leaders Hednesford Town in the Second Round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy on Saturday - subject to pitch conditions, obviously.

The Pitmen are five points clear at the top of the table, having picked up 14 wins and 5 draws from their 23 league games so far.

Ford revealed he is without the suspended Sonny Cobbs for the trip to Staffordshire and will need to decide who will replace him at left-back.

“It will be a tough one up there,” said Ford. “Sonny Cobbs is out for that one and we really haven’t got a replacement to be honest, an ideal one, so we’ve got to work our way round that one.”

Meanwhile, the Wings London Senior Cup tie at Ryman One South side Croydon Athletic tonight has been postponed, like many others, due to a frozen pitch.
