Commercially it's extremely important to reach FA Cup First Round, says Bromley boss Mark Goldberg

BROMLEY manager Mark Goldberg says he is looking forward to their massive FA Cup winner-takes-all showdown against Worcester City on Saturday.


The Lillywhites went down to their first home defeat of the season when their Kent rivals Welling United came away from Hayes Lane with a 2-0 win last weekend, courtesy of goals from Theo Fairweather-Johnson and Lee Clarke.

A crowd of 1,334 flocked through the turnstiles to watch the two Kent club’s on Non-League Day, which also attracted cameras from SKY Sports and Kick It Out, football’s equality and inclusion campaign, to the club.

Goldberg admitted he was disappointed with his side’s display against the Wings, but will get his troops up for the FA Cup at the weekend.

Goldberg has guided the club to the First Round in 2006, 2010 and last season, but on each occasion they were defeated by Gillingham, Colchester United and Leyton Orient.

Worcester City arrive in Kent sitting in sixth-place in the Blue Square Bet (Conference) North table, with five wins and four draws from eleven games and look like a tough nut to crack going by those statistics.

Any replay will take place at St George’s Lane next Monday, 22 October (7:45pm), but Goldberg wants to get the job done at the first attempt.

“It’s massive for any club being in the fourth qualifying round with the first round looming, we all want to be there, but commercially for the club it’s extremely important, not just for the prize money winning that game, but the opportunity to carry on,” said Goldberg.

“Yes, we don’t want to go to Worcester on Monday night, that’s for sure, but maybe with a minute to go we might be hoping or be grateful that we’re still in the hat.

“I don’t think we should say anything other than the fact that we’ve got a great opportunity to win and be in the hat.”

Reflecting on his three First Round appearances during his three spells in charge at Hayes Lane, Goldberg said: “The FA Cup is massive for the club and for us, the management team and for the players, so we’re hopeful that we can keep that good run going.”

Worcester City, who also lost their unbeaten home record at the weekend, sent two scouts to Hayes Lane last weekend and Goldberg added: “I’m sure they’re rubbing their hands if they were here, but we’ve just got to be all together and a lot better prepared.”
