Confidence is high going into our last six games, says Sawyer

Thursday 02nd April 2009

DARTFORD assistant manager Paul Sawyer has warned that he is expecting a backlash from Sutton United at Gander Green Lane on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.

Sutton United were outclassed by Dover Athletic, losing 6-0 at Crabble, a result that sealed the Ryman Premier League title for Andy Hessenthaler’s side last weekend.

And Sawyer, speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk following his side’s exciting 2-2 home draw with Tonbridge Angels last weekend, expects Sutton to bite back.

“That’s not always a good thing, we might be on the receiving end of them,” he said.

But Dartford will go into the game having trained twice this week, and Sawyer explained why.

“At this stage of the season sometimes you give the lads a night off,” he said.

“We feel we’ve still got things to go for so we’ll come and work on things.

“Every game in this league is a tough game, but we’ll go there confident with the aim of picking up three points.”

Sawyer hopes the new strike partnership of Bradley Woods-Garness and Jay May continues to blossom,  as the pair impressed against Tonbridge Angels last weekend.

“That partnership is only going to get better!” insisted Sawyer. “They look like they will complement each other.

“Jay held it up, he’s good in the air and Bradley’s sharp, he can play off Jay and there’s options there. Craig Carley can play up top so we’ve got good attacking options at the moment.”

The Darts are in eighth place in the Ryman Premier League table - just four points adrift of the play-off’s, although they do have six games left to play.

“The aim is still to get in there, we’re not going to give up until it’s impossible,” added Sawyer on the club’s play-off push.

“We feel we’re getting back to where we were and heading into the last six games confidence is definitely growing and we’ll give it a good shot.”
