We absolutely have to be at the top of our game to achieve anything from the match, says Corinthian boss Michael Golding

CORINTHIAN manager Michael Golding says his side have recently turned a corner.

The club welcome sixteenth-place Wessex League Premier Division side Alresford Town to Gay Dawn Farm tomorrow in The Buildbase FA Vase Second Round.

Corinthian are unbeaten in their last four games and go into the tie sitting in eleventh-place in the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division table, having won four, drawn five and lost six of their league games.

“We feel as though we have recently turned a corner and this has been emphasised by keeping three clean sheets in a row,” said Golding.

“I am very pleased for Joe Hagan, Marcus Evans and Louis Pearce in particular, as all three have been outstanding in recent weeks and have worked incredibly hard which has given us the platform to go and get the positive results we have achieved.”

Reflecting on their goal-less draw at AFC Croydon Athletic last weekend, Golding said: “The match was both pleasing and frustrating in equal measure.

“They had two efforts from corners cleared off the line early in the first half but once we settled into the game, we felt we went on to dominate the game and had the better chances, having three goals disallowed for offside, hitting the bar twice and also having two cleared off the line ourselves.

“However, Croydon is always a tough place to travel, even more so with how well they have started this season and before the game if we had been offered a point and a clean sheet, we probably would have reluctantly taken it.”

Golding is looking forward to The FA Vase tie against Hampshire based outfit Alresford Town.

“Tomorrow is another big game for the club. It is the furthest the club have gone in the competition since re-joining the League back in 2009 and we will certainly be looking to continue our participation in the competition, while also aiming to put some money into the club as a thank you for everything they do for us.

“We know just how tough the match will be, Alresford are a good side and have had a not to dissimilar start to their season as we have had ours.

“We have, as always, prepared as well as we can with a good week’s training and we travelled down to watch them on Wednesday night, so we have an idea of what to expect.

“We only have Jamie Billings and Jamie Taylor missing through long-term injuries, so other than that we have virtually a fully fit squad to choose from.

“We go into the match full of confidence from our recent run, but also aware that we are the underdogs and will absolutely have to be at the top of our game to achieve anything from the match.”
