Cray Wanderers boss Tony Russell: It’s my 200th game in charge, maybe it’s written in the stars

CRAY WANDERERS manager Tony Russell says it’s written in the stars that his side will win the Bostik South East Division title in his 200^th game in charge of the club.

The Wands had to beat basement side Greenwich Borough to claim the title yesterday but they were held to a 1-1 draw at Hayes Lane.

Cray Wanderers have four more league games to get over the line, starting with a visit from ex-boss Tommy Warrilow and his Ashford United side next Saturday.

The Nuts & Bolts sit in fourth-place in the table with 61 points – 12 points adrift of the Wands.

Russell revealed he was at Reachfields Stadium on Saturday to watch Hythe Town’s 3-1 win over Warrilow’s promotion chasing side.

“Ashford are a really good side. I went to watch them and it will be a cracking game,” said Russell.

“They’re probably scratching their head how they lost to Hythe. For 60 minutes they were just very, very good and Hythe came strong at the end. 

“Ashford play a diamond, they’ve got some good players in that diamond. It will be decent on this surface, it will be a cracking game.”

Cray Wanderers are eight points clear of second-placed Horsham and have games against Ashford United, Three Bridges, Sevenoaks Town and Hythe Town to claim the two points they need to win the title.

“It’s my 200^th game in charge, maybe it’s written in the stars,” said Russell.

“I can’t knock the players. I was proud of them yesterday. I thought they gave everything for me.  As a manager, supporter, owner, if they put on a shift and give everything for you, you can’t ask for no more.

“Sometimes in football it’s not your day.”
