We're going to have a right go at the league now, says Cray Wanderers boss Tony Russell
CRAY WANDERERS manager Tony Russell says he’s concentrating on the league for the rest of the season.
The Wands were knocked out of The Buildbase FA Trophy in the Second Qualifying Round by Ryman Premier League side Worthing at Hayes Lane last Sunday, the Rebels winning 2-1.
Cray Wanderers have exited all of their cup competitions that they enter and sit in seventh-place in the Ryman League Division One South table with 28 points from their 16 league outings.
Russell’s men are 18 points adrift of league leaders Dorking Wanderers (but have played three games fewer) and are five points behind fifth-placed Hythe Town, who occupy the final play-off berth.
“What we’re going to do now, it’s all about the league now,” said Russell, who has 30 league games of the season left to play.
“We’re out of all the cups now, there’s no more distractions. It’s all out for that league and we’re going to have a right go of it now.
“I’m aiming to win it, just like every other manager should. If any manager stood there and didn’t, he’s in the wrong game!
“I’ve seen pretty much everyone now, there’s some cracking sides in this league. There’s about eight that are capable of winning it. I’d like to think we are one of them as well.
“We have to make sure that we’re consistent and just have a go, have a right go.
“Listen, in terms of these boys’ togetherness and quality, I can’t do no more in terms of the budget. We’ve got what I’ve got.
“If anyone can get better than me I’ll step aside. I’ve got to spend every penny I’ve got and I’ve got a great set of guys who love playing for this club, who give honest performances. We’re just got to work hard and we can put a lovely run together and give ourselves half a chance.”
Chipstead arrive at Hayes Lane on Saturday in the bottom six with a league playing record of five wins, three draws and 11 defeats.
