As long as the togetherness and the attitude is there then we will be a tough side to beat, says Cray Wanderers assistant Joe Vines

Sunday 27th August 2017

CRAY WANDERERS assistant manager Joe Vines hailed his side’s performance against Molesey yesterday.

The Wands bounced back from their 3-2 home defeat to Sevenoaks Town in The FA Cup last Sunday to thrash Molesey 4-0 at Hayes Lane.

Bradley Stevenson, who is on loan from Sky Bet League One side Gillingham, got the ball rolling, before Freddie Parker, Lea Dawson and Jay Leader rattled in the goals.

“We played some of our best stuff on Saturday against a side that will upset a few teams,” said Vines, who played in the 3-0 win at Thamesmead Town in the Kent Reliance Senior Cup in midweek.

“We freshened the side up after the midweek cup win at Thamesmead and this gave us a little bit of renewed energy after a tough couple of opening games.

“We have really focused on being harder to break down and although we still like to play passing football, it is not at the cost of effective, concisive, purposeful football.

“There were good performances from front to back but really pleased with the contribution of the younger boys Freddie Parker, Bradley Stevenson and Aaron Rhule.”

Tony Russell’s men are in eleventh-place in the Bostik South table with five points on the board from their three league outings.

They travel to newly-promoted side Shoreham tomorrow.  They have suffered three defeats to South Park (0-4), Horsham (0-3) and went down to a 4-1 home defeat to Carshalton Athletic yesterday.

Their only win has come in The FA Cup when they needed a home replay to beat Colliers Wood United 3-1 in midweek after being held to a 1-1 draw away from home.

“We don’t know a lot about Shoreham. From what I have heard about them, they have had an unfortunate start and the results have not reflected their performances so we will prepare properly and not take them lightly at all,” said Vines.

“It should be an enjoyable Bank Holiday Monday and we will try our utmost to take maximum points.

“The season so far has been great and frustrating in equal measures as we lost some key players prior to the season starting that gave us a few problems in the final third in terms of combinations.

“The individuals we have with us are all good players, to the man, but we struggled with the chemistry.

“With the boys we have brought in recently our squad is much stronger for the long, hard fight that we have ahead.

“We are not overly concerned with results at this stage as we realise the amount of personnel changes makes gelling the most important thing for us.

“As long as the togetherness and the attitude is there then we will be a tough side to beat.”
