Cray Wanderers chairman Gary Hillman: Great news to hear Sadiq Khan's positive views on non-league football and keeping club’s alive
CRAY WANDERERS officials have asked Sadiq Khan to attend one of their home games – after the London Mayor attended Dulwich Hamlet’s abandoned game against Dorking Wanderers yesterday.
Mr Khan was at Imperial Fields, the home of Bostik Premier Division side Tooting & Mitcham United – wearing a pink and blue scarf – to support troubled Dulwich Hamlet’s bid to return home to Champion Hill following the club’s long-running battle with Meadow.
The Good Friday afternoon match was abandoned after 17 minutes due to a waterlogged pitch with the score goal-less and Mr Khan tweeted: “Brilliant atmosphere at Dulwich Hamlet and great support from fans from all clubs. It can’t be right that the club’s future is uncertain and I’m proud to show my support today.
“Dulwich Hamlet fans are passionate, determined and fighting to save their club. It is the heart and soul of the local community and I’m proud to stand with them today.”
Bromley Council voted 11-3 to give the go-ahead of Cray Wanderers building a new stadium at Flamingo Park in Chislehurst.
The stadium can only go ahead if Mr Khan gives the Bostik South Division club the go-ahead – or London’s oldest football club will endure a bleak future.
Cray Wanderers chairman Gary Hillman Tweeted: “Well done Liam Hickey (Dulwich Hamlet chairman) on getting the Mayor of London to Dulwich Hamlet’s game today – great news to hear his positive views on non-league football and keeping club’s alive.
“Cray Wanderers look forward to his support on our planning application soon.”
Cray Wanderers assistant manager, Joe Vines, said in a Twitter posting to the Mayor.
“Fantastic to see you support grass roots football with Cray Wanderers next on the agenda. Do the right thing Mr Mayor.”
Let’s hope Mr Khan’s visit to a Dulwich Hamlet match is not just for political voting but he generally cares about non-league football in London.
I’m sure Cray Wanderers will be happy to donate an amber and black scarf for Mr Khan to wear for the day!
