Curtis Robinson scoops double award at Margate
Friday 06th May 2011
MARGATE held their end of season presentations after the 3-3 draw with Kingstonian last Saturday and the big winner was Curtis Robinson (article courtesy of Steve Wells – www.margate-fc.com) After a season that saw the defender notch up 100 appearances for the Blues, Robinson was recognised by his team mates and won the player’s player of the year accolade. Not only that, he went on to secure the supporter’s player of the year award too.
“Very surprised” was how he described the double accolade.
Robinson is a modest man and claims not to see what his fellow players or the supporters see in his game. But his growing maturity as a consistent and versatile performer must be amongst the attributes they see.
“It’s experience, it’s the only word for it,” concedes the 22 year old, when speaking to www.margate-fc.com.
Curtis recalls a sense of, “nerves, you don’t want to make mistakes,” when he first broke into the Margate side.
“As I’ve gone on – the last or so – I’m not worried about making mistakes. I just do what I need to do,” he said.
“I was so scared before about making mistakes. You’ve got hundreds of fans watching, they get on your back …. once you start doing well, confidence comes, they cheer you on and you just feel comfortable. I feel comfortable in myself and I just want to play well.”
But Curtis wasn’t the only Robinson to be recognised in the end of season awards. Brother Courtney – ever-present in the reserves this season - is shaping up to be another very accomplished defender and he was awarded the young player of the year trophy. (Unfortunately, Courtney was unable to be at the presentations.)
Courtney has featured in a number of first team squads during the current campaign making two appearances in the Championship Manager Cup and the Kent Senior Cup.
Staying with Gate’s second string, Anthony Woodward was the reserves player of the year. A striker, Anthony has also featured for the first team this season, also in the Championship Manager Cup and the Kent Senior Cup.
In addition to the player presentations, director Cliff Egan expressed the Board’s thanks to all the people who, “voluntarily give up their time to make this club tick on match days, and without who this club could not function.”
Mr Egan also expressed his gratitude to Kevin Raine who stepped into the caretaker manager’s role at short notice.
One member of the match day staff leaving the club will be physio George Johnson, who is retiring. George leaves with the club’s best wishes for his retirement.
“I’m sure there is someone I’ve missed, but rest assured all your efforts are greatly appreciated,” said Mr Egan.
“Finally, I’d like to make a special mention to all our supporters; some who travel vast distances to follow this great club. I would like to pay tribute to those of you who turn up every week supporting the club through thick and thin.
“Thank you all, you are a credit to the club.”
