Daish shows no sentiment towards Cambridge
Tuesday 11th August 2009
EBBSFLEET UNITED boss Liam Daish says he wants his young side to carry on with their momentum against Cambridge United tonight, writes Stephen McCartney.
Daish has re-built virtually a new squad from scratch during the close season, and they got their Blue Square Premier campaign off to a good start, coming away from Altrincham with a point on Saturday as debutant James Lindie cancelled out Chris Senior’s opener.
“It took us a little bit of time for the lads to adjust to the rigours,” Daish told www.kentishfootball.co.uk this lunchtime.
“They’ve not experienced the Conference National before, but we got stronger as the game went on.
“We passed the ball better as the game went on and we deservedly got a point and probably could have claimed all three.”
The point was just reward for Daish for his efforts in rebuilding his squad, following the mass player exodus during the summer, caused by budget cuts.
“I mean that’s not necessarily my choice,” he admitted. “In an ideal world I’d like to keep them but that’s where we’re at so you get on with it and keep trying to unearth some more gems.”
And for those Fleet fans that haven’t seen his young guns in action, Daish has issued a rallying cry for all to get themselves to Stonebridge Road tonight.
“Hopefully they’ll see a bit of energy, enthusiasm and a team that’s going to pass the ball and will be brave on and off the ball,” said Daish.
“They’ve seen glimpses of that in pre-season and I’m sure as the season goes forward, we’ll hopefully improve as the games go by.
“It’s all about gaining confidence now, so if we can do that we’ll gain some momentum - but it’s a long old season.”
Daish faces one of his former club’s tonight, but added, “I just want to get three points whoever we’re playing. It’s no sentiment in this tonight - it’s all about getting points.
“It should be a nice evening and hopefully people will come down and really enjoy the game and the whole night."
