Dartford boss Tony Burman seeks vastly improved performance against Port Vale

Monday 15th November 2010
AFTER being just seven minutes from causing one of the upsets of the FA Cup First Round, Tony Burman takes his Dartford side to face Port Vale on Tuesday night knowing that whilst the occasion is the biggest for the club for many years, it will be just as important to get victory in their next League game as glory in the Potteries would be, writes Mike Green.

Speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk after Saturday’s 4-0 home drubbing by Dorchester Town in Blue Square Bet South, Burman said: “Tuesday – its a huge game for the club. I’m especially delighted for all the people who do voluntary things for the club as now they’re getting a bit of the limelight.

“But at the end of the day, its not the most important game of our season.

“I’ve got a couple of interesting choices to make and we’ll have a long hard think about the side before Tuesday night.

“I could have made a lot of changes against Dorchester at the weekend but I wish I had now as hindsight is a great thing, but the side had done well against Port Vale and at Dover and so I felt that that was the most important thing to do especially as I considered Saturday’s League game to be more important than Tuesday night.”

The Darts boss was disappointed with his players as their heads went down as Dorchester scored all of their four goals in the final 26 minutes, dampening Princes Park’s fourth anniversary celebrations, on Saturday.

He said: “It was a poor 26 minutes from us I’m afraid and the heads went down too quickly I’m afraid and that’s not good enough!”

Clearly angry, Burman went on, “We didn’t have enough passion – our organisation went and that’s wrong and that just shows how quickly things can change in this game.

“We did a similar thing to Dover last Tuesday to what Dorchester have done to us today. But fair play to Dorchester they set their stall out; they had a plan and they stuck to it and fair play to them.

“At least if Port Vale did watch us on Saturday they’d have seen us at our worst, and will probably be licking their lips at the prospect of the replay. And if that happens we could get hammered – lets be honest if they’d have played to their full potential in the first game we could have got hammered at home but it wasn’t to be and we didn’t. Now we’ve just got to hope that the same thing happens on Tuesday night and that we’re able to put in a good performance.

“I’m looking forward to it but there’s part of me wishing that it’ll all be over and we can concentrate on the day to day stuff of the league but make no mistake we’re going to go there and we’re going to have a go – that’s what we’ll do! And make no mistakes, after Saturday’s horror showing I’m now looking for a reaction from my players and I better get it!”

At least 300 Dartford supporters are expected to travel to Vale Park, although the League Two outfit have announced today that two other stands (housing home fans) will be closed.

Micky Adams’ side are still in second place in League Two with two defeats in 16 league games and at the weekend they were held to a goal-less draw away to ten-man Northampton Town.

Port Vale's average attendance at Vale Park is 6,155.
