Dartford explain why they have scrapped reserve side

Tuesday 22nd June 2010
DARTFORD have confirmed that they have withdrawn their successful reserve side because Kent League football is not suitable for a Blue Square Bet South club, writes Stephen McCartney.

It was a successful campaign for the Princes Park club last season with first team boss Tony Burman guiding the club to the Ryman Premier League title and reserve team boss Paul Hennessy oversaw the collection of three trophies.

But as the Kent club climbs the pyramid, Burman feels the reserve divisions of the Kent League are not suitable for his second string.

A club statement, posted on www.dartfordfconline.com said: “Tony Burman has announced today that unfortunately after discussions between Paul Hennessy, the board of directors and Tony, it is felt that the level of the league and facilities were not up to standard of football that leads to the required development of our younger players.

“One of the options which Tony considered with Paul was to look at the possibility of playing in the Kent Premier Division as advised by their officials.  Unfortunately our application was unsuccessful, so with full approval from the board of directors and Paul Hennessy it has been agreed to disband the reserve team.

“Tony has expressed that should an opportunity become available where we may join a league of the acceptable standard at a later date, then this will be investigated.

“Tony would like to take this opportunity to thank Paul and Steve for all their hard work and support with the reserves and hope that there will be an opening to stay involved with Dartford Football Club in the future.”

Two of Dartford’s Blue Square Bet South rivals, Ebbsfleet United and Bromley will be competing in the Capital League next season.
