WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day has agreed one-year contracts with two young strikers once they leave Gillingham in August, writes Stephen McCartney.

Andy Pugh and Luis Cumbers, both 21, will join the Blue Square Bet South club on one-year deals when their contracts at Priestfield Stadium expire. Gravesend born Pugh, signed Scholarship forms with the Gills in 2005, and first joined the Wings on loan during 2007, where he scored a couple of goals during 6 loan appearances.

He then joined Maidstone United, Folkestone Invicta, Grays Athletic, Dover Athletic on loan, before returning to Park View Road last season, where he scored 8 goals in 15 appearances, before having another loan spell with Histon.

Chelmsford-born Cumbers, meanwhile, has also spent time on loan at non-league sides, since signing for Gillingham in 2007.

He has played for Maidstone United, Grays Athletic, AFC Wimbledon, Ebbsfleet United, AFC Wimbledon and Dover Athletic, who have all utilised the striker’s pace during loan spells.

Day, who was speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk today, is delighted to be able to add the striking pair to his squad, which includes Lee Clarke and Tommy Whitnell, who are also vying for places up front next season.

The 30-year-old midfield playmaker said: “I think they are two excellent young players, who can both score goals, but also add quality to our team.

“I have been chasing both for a while and they both sign one-year contracts when their current contracts expire in August.” When asked about any further transfers, Day replied, “We’re also in talks with three players at present but nothing has been agreed.”
