WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day says he wants to have the majority of his squad tied to the club before the squad report back for pre-season training, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Park View Road club have confirmed that former Cray Wanderers striker, Tommy Whitnell, has decided to stay, having scored 15 goals from 27 starting appearances for the Wings last season.

Day, speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk this lunchtime, admitted he was pleased that Tommy is staying with the club.

“I am happy he accepted the contract that I offered him,” said Day.

“He can play a good role next year.  He is one of four strikers we’re looking to have next season.”

When asked about his current transfer dealings, Day replied, “We are close to agreeing deals with two players soon.  We are also looking to bring in one or two more before pre-season starts.”

He added: “I would like to have 12 players signed before we report back on 1 July.”

Meanwhile, Day has utilised his contacts by attracting three London sides to Park View Road for lucrative pre-season friendlies in July.

Charlton Athletic (13 July), Millwall (20 July) and Arsenal (24 July) will surely attract bumper crowds in preparation for the club’s forthcoming Blue Square South campaign.
