Debutant Westermen left in the dark on Deres' debut

Friday 21st November 2008

THE LIGHTS went out on Daniel Westerman on his mixed Erith & Belvedere debut tonight, writes Stephen McCartney.

Westerman, 22, was the Kent League Division One Golden Boot winner last season, whilst playing for Dartford’s second string. He created a whole host of interest as club’s chased his signature, but he opted to sign for Kent League side Slade Green in the summer.

Dropping back into midfield, the former Phoenix Sports striker found the net five times in seventeen appearances for Matt Longhurst’s side, but despite recent interest from neighbours Erith Town, he opted to sign for the Deres this week.

But his Deres’ debut only lasted 78 minutes as tonight’s home match against Greenwich Borough was abandoned due to a floodlight failure, with the score at 1-1.

Westermen, who was booked in the second half, thought he had scored on his debut, two minutes before Borough were reduced to ten-men when Ryan Watts was red-carded after 23 minutes of the Park View Road clash.

Mark Sisson’s second half strike brought Steve Firkins’ side level, but match referee Anthony Rawlings brought a half to proceedings when the ground was plunged into darkness so close to the end of the game.

Meanwhile, Slade Green have brought in their second player from Ryman Premier League high-flyers Tonbridge Angels.

Angels boss Tommy Warrilow has agreed to loan out central defender Mike Cramp to The Small Glen club.

Cramp broke into the first team squad after impressing with the Angels’ youth and reserve set-ups but his career has been halted by a lengthy injury.

Second choice goalkeeper, Martin Grant, who has started two games for the Angels' first team, joined Slade Green on loan a few weeks back.
