Defender Ben Payne leaves Chatham for Dockers

Friday 16th July 2010
ERITH TOWN boss Steve O’Boyle has continued to strengthen his squad by unveiling defender Ben Payne as another summer signing, writes Stephen McCartney.

The 23-year-old played for Ryman League side Chatham Town last season, but has opted to drop down a division to sign for the Kent League Dockers.

Chatham are under Paul Foley’s management this season and he has brought 95% of his VCD Athletic squad to Maidstone Road, leaving last season’s Chatham squad considering their futures.

Left-back, Ashley Probets, who ironically joined Chatham Town from VCD Athletic last summer for Alex O’Brien’s only season in charge, is presently on trial at Blue Square Bet South side Dartford.

And O’Boyle told www.kentishfootball.co.uk:
"Ben played for Chatham last season and has trained with us and Chatham pre-season and we are delighted he has decided to join us.

“He is a very good defender, who is very strong in the air and in a tackle.”

Payne will make his club debut in Erith Town’s opening pre-season friendly away to Chessington & Hook United tomorrow.
