Discipline has probably cost us a place in the play-off’s, admits Faversham Town boss
The Lilywhites suffered their only defeat to a Kent rival when Ramsgate came away from Salters Lane with a 2-0 win on Tuesday night.
Last season’s Kent League double winners were fighting for a play-off place a few weeks back, but a run of seven games without a win has dented those chances.
Tenth-placed Faversham have collected 47 points from 35 games, three points short of Luchford’s initial target and seven points adrift of fifth-place.
“I think the play-off’s have gone now,” admitted Luchford.
“But I’ve said for a long time that we’ll need 50 points - I said it three months ago and we still haven’t got them!”
He added: “That’s the nature of this league and we’ve just got to make sure – we’re not going to go down, and I think we’ve certainly surprised a few people this year and I think we should be proud of what we’ve achieved this year.
“Unfortunately discipline has probably cost us a place in the play-off’s, but if we learn we’ll come back next year and certainly give it a go.”
Luchford takes his side to fourteenth-placed Godalming Town on Saturday, a side that were beaten by Folkestone Invicta in the play-off final last May, with Ramsgate one place above and Sittingbourne one place below them in the league table.
And Luchford said: “We’ve still got seven games to go and we’ve got a lot to play for – I’m damned if I’m going to let any Kent side finish above us.
“Ramsgate were the first Kent side that’s beaten us this year and they didn’t deserve to.
“We’ve got one left and that’s the derby with Sittingbourne (at home on 25 April) and if we workout all the head-to-head’s with the other Kent sides and only lose one there won’t be another Kent side that does that!”
