Dolby pays tribute to prolific strikers

Wednesday 07th February 2007

The two most prolific goalscorers in the entire country go head-to-head at Hartsdown Park on Saturday - and Tonbridge Angels manager Tony Dolby paid tribute to them both, writes Stephen McCartney.

Jon Main netted his SIXTH hat-trick of the season as Tonbridge Angels chalked up their fourteenth Ryman Premier League win of the season as they defeated their Kent rivals Ramsgate on Tuesday night.

The 25-year-old striker has joined Margate’s hit-man Danny Hockton on 31 goals and both will want to steal the limelight in the “east meets west” Kent derby on Saturday.

Margate returned to the summit when a Greg Oates thunderbolt saw off Carshalton Athletic on Tuesday night. That Hartsdown Park clash kicked off at least an hour late as players endured traffic problems en-route.

But Dolby is relishing the battle between the two best strikers in the country, although he wants Main to outshine Hockton.

“That’s mouth-watering for the two lads,” he told www.kentishfootball.co.uk following his side’s 3-2 win over Ramsgate.

“I’m really sure none of them will score and it will be a scrappy one from a centre half that will win the game,” he joked.

“It’s typical of these type of events but both Danny and Jon have both done exceptionally well, got a bit of exposure for the Ryman League and they’ve been a credit to the clubs the pair of them and hopefully Jon will come out on top on Saturday.”

During the past month the Angels have locked horns with teams such as Bromley (twice), Billericay Town, AFC Wimbledon and Ramsgate.

They travel to Hartsdown Park on Saturday seeking revenge after losing 2-1 back in November, with Paul Abbott’s long-range fluke goal handing Robin Trott’s men the points.

Dolby said: “I think it’s quite fair to say that we’ve had an unbelievably hard run of games.

“You just look at the last four, Ramsgate, Wimbledon, Bromley and Chelmsford, and we’ve come out with six points from those four games.

“That’s some going when you look at Tonbridge as a club competing against these type of teams and I think we have to be as positive as we can.

“I mean, we’ve won fourteen games this season and not many clubs have done that and I think if we can eradicate some of the inconsistency who knows what we can achieve.”

Dolby’s side, however, produce entertaining matches. In their 29 league games, the Angels have scored 52 goals but leaked 49.

“We haven’t shut up shop as much as I’d like to against a lot of teams,” admitted Dolby.

“We’ve conceded far too many goals but we’ve also scored a hell of a lot of goals.

“But at the end of the day we can defend stoutly and I’m sure we can do a job on Danny (Hockton).

One player who can shore up their defence is combative midfielder Scott Kinch.

The former Tooting & Mitcham United midfielder has sat out their last twelve games due to injury.

But Kinch has been given the go-ahead to play for Julian Leigh’s reserve side against Horley Town next Tuesday night at the Betterview Longmead Stadium - and the player cannot wait as he hates watching matches.

“Scott’s looking good as is Jon Heath,” revealed Dolby. “I think we’ve missed Scott immensely during this tough run of games.

“His presence and what he brings to the table each week would have been vital for us.

“In saying that, who knows how it would have gone (as) you’re going to get injuries and suspensions but unfortunately we’ve been hit with some key players, Scott Kinch and Robert Kember, being out for a while,.

“We’ve come out the other side of it and hopefully Scott will pick up where he left off.”
