Dover Athletic boss Martin Hayes releases quartet

Friday 06th May 2011
DOVER ATHLETIC boss Martin Hayes has issued his retain list for the new season, writes Justin Allen.

The club narrowly missed out on the Blue Square Bet South play-off’s, finishing in seventh place with 74 points from 42 games, just a couple of points adrift of fifth-placed Woking.

Players being released are Sam Long, Joe Tabiri, Elliott Charles and Lewwis Spence.

Ross Flitney, Matt Fish, Rob Gillman, Olly Schulz, Harry Baker, Barry Cogan, Jon Wallis and Sam Cutler have all been offered new deals.

Luke I’Anson, Adam Birchall and Tom Wynter are already under contract.

Hayes told www.doverathletic.com:  We hope everyone signs. We want to compete for the title next season and are looking to bring four or five more players in to bolster the squad to give us a much better chance."

Meanwhile, Dover Mayor Sue Jones presented Birchall with the player of the season award on Saturday, not once but twice.

Whites' super striker was recognised by both supporters and teammates for his outstanding contribution this season.

Mayor Jones also made a presentation to the club, accepted by captain Rob Gillman, in recognition of the unprecedented FA Cup success and the positive effect it had on the town of Dover as a community.

Birchall has not only broken club goalscoring records (with 45 goals) and been the top scorer in the FA Cup but he has represented Dover Athletic with passion, hard work and sportsmanship on and off the pitch throughout the last 10 months.

In the fans' vote, goalkeeper Ross Flitney was awarded second place for his consistent displays and FA Cup heroics, while right back Matt Fish, the club's second longest serving player, came in third.

Appreciation was also shown in a presentation to one of the unsung volunteers at Crabble. Young Callum Gladwish can be seen at almost every game assisting the coaching staff and kitman Robin Hastie on matchdays, plus helping around the club behind the scenes.
