Edgar Davids turns down ambitious Greenwich Borough approach

Monday 07th July 2014
GREENWICH BOROUGH have unveiled the signing of former Burton Albion striker Gary Alexander, 34, but have failed in their ambitious attempt to sign Edgar Davids.

The big spending Southern Counties East Football League club has persuaded the former West Ham United, Exeter City (loan), Swindon Town, Hull City, Leyton Orient, Millwall, Brentford, Crawley Town, AFC Wimbledon (loan) and Burton Albion striker to drop down five divisions to play for the Dartford based club.

A club statement said: “The club are delighted to have signed a player with such a pedigree.

“Unfortunately the attempt to sign Edgar Davids has not been as successful, but other signings are expected to be made in the near future.”

Former Cray Wanderers manager, Ian Jenkins, guided Greenwich Borough to a ninth-place finish in the Southern Counties East Football League last season.

The club launched an ambitious attempt to sign Dutch superstar Davids, 41, who last played and managed Conference Premier side Barnet before leaving the club in January 2014.

But like Beckenham Town’s attempts to sign former England and Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham five years ago, seeing Davids turn out in the Southern Counties East Football League this coming season was likely never going to happen, as today’s statement from the club proved.
