Erith Town boss Tony Russell faces pre-season set-back
Monday 25th July 2011
ERITH TOWN boss Tony Russell admits his preparations for the new season have been put back after pitch issues at the Erith Sports Stadium has forced the cancellation of the Kent League club’s opening two friendlies, writes Stephen McCartney.Tonight’s game against Ryman Premier League newcomers Metropolitan Police – who have signed midfielder Tony Finn from Blue Square Bet South side Bromley – has been cancelled.
Chatham Town officials learnt that their game against the Dockers was cancelled at 12:45pm on Saturday.
Russell, who guided the club to Kent Senior Trophy glory last season, said: “Our game was called off Saturday, because we’ve got a pop up sprinkler system and for whatever reason the sprinklers have stayed up and they won’t go back down so the groundsman’s on it this week to try to rectify the problem.
“There’s meeting going on to sort out why this has happened but we’ve now lost two pre-season games.
“If anyone could give us a game this week, even if we can get two games in, we’re looking at two fixtures away from home this week, if anyone’s interested, give me a call.
“I know it’s short notice, we just need to get some friendlies in, otherwise we’ve only got three friendlies remaining, which isn’t good preparation for the season.”
Club official Ian Birrell, meanwhile, confirmed that the club’s next two home games, against Carshalton Athletic on Saturday, and Welling United next Monday, are on.
