Every season you want to improve - so that's second or first, says Vickers boss Ricky Bennett

Friday 22nd July 2011
VCD ATHLETIC boss Ricky Bennett says he wants his side to improve on last season, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Crayford based club were rocked to the foundations last summer as they were demoted from the Ryman League and lost the vast majority of their squad to Chatham Town.

But Bennett and his assistant manager Andy Silk re-built the squad and they went on to finish a creditable third place in the Kent League table.

“Every season you want to improve on the previous one, so that means coming second or first basically,” said Bennett, following his side’s 2-1 win over tenants Erith & Dartford Town at Oakwood last night.

Bennett added: “A cup final would be nice. We got to the semi-final and the quarter-final last season.  It would be nice to get to a cup final, maybe win something.

“We’ve got it about us, it’s just how we deal with it.  A good start is important and we’ll go from there and obviously a nice run in the Vase, a few away days is always good in the Vase, so we’re hoping for a decent season.”

VCD Athletic welcome Ryman Premier League side Cray Wanderers to Oakwood tomorrow and Bennett has fond memories of his time at Hayes Lane under long-serving legendary manager Ian Jenkins.

“I’m looking forward to meeting up with Jenko,” said Bennett.

“I think Joe Francis is away so I won’t see him, but a few of the other lads, Blado (Paul Blade), and a few of the other players, not many there from my day I don’t think but it will be nice to see them and that will be a real test.”
