FA Carlsberg Trophy: First Round Draw - Wings boss Jamie Day relishing trip to Luton Town
A sublime second half finish from former Gillingham striker Luis Cumbers helped the Wings knock out Ryman Premier League side Tonbridge Angels in the third qualifying round at the weekend, and player-manager Jamie Day can now look forward to the trip to Kenilworth Road on 11 December.
“I think it’s the best draw we could have got in the competition, apart from getting to the final,” Day told www.kentishfootball.co.uk following the draw, which was made at The Football Association’s headquarters at Wembley Stadium this morning.
“It will help the club money wise, which is needed at this stage, and whilst it is the toughest draw, it is one the players will enjoy and hopefully show what they can do and with a bit of luck, you never know.”
The Hatters spent ten years in the top-flight of English football between 1982-1992, winning the League Cup in 1988 with a 3-2 win over Arsenal at Wembley Stadium.More recently, financial difficulties have caused the club to fall, in just three years, from the second tier of English football to the fifth, ending its 89-year spell as a member of The Football League.
Richard Money’s side are presently in third place in the Blue Square Bet Premier table, just two points behind leaders AFC Wimbledon and have lost just one game at home.Despite the Bedfordshire club playing their second season in non-league football, crowds have been good, with a total number of 72,721 fans flocking through the turnstiles, with an average of 6,060.
A crowd of 7,283 watched Luton’s 3-0 win over AFC Wimbledon in September, whilst their lowest was an FA Cup First Round replay win over Corby Town five days ago, which attracted a disappointing 3,050.The Wings sit in third place in the league below with only four league defeats and are only six points behind the leaders, their Kent rivals, Bromley.
Player-manager Day, 31, his management team of Barry Ashby and Dean Frost, and his players have done an excellent job, especially as the Park View Road are still under a transfer embargo and have only 15 other players available.Meanwhile, Dartford’s reward for knocking out their Blue Square Bet South rivals Thurrock, courtesy of a Carl Rook brace on Saturday, is a trip to big-spending Crawley Town.
Steve Evans has led the Sussex side to second in the Blue Square Bet Premier table after 19 games and thrashed Altrincham 7-0 in the league at the weekend. But second-from-bottom side Hayes & Yeading will travel to either Ebbsfleet United or Bromley in the First Round.
The two Kent sides lock horns to play their delayed third qualifying round tie at Stonebridge Road on Tuesday night.First Round ties take place on Saturday, 11 December 2010.
