FA CARLSBERG TROPHY THIRD ROUND DRAW: MORE TRAVELLING FOR KENT'S LAST TWO

Monday 11th January 2010

The draw for the last sixteen of the FA Carlsberg Trophy has been made at Wembley this morning, despite none of the Second Round games beating the Big Freeze at the weekend, writes Mike Green.

For Lloyd Hume's Maidstone United (who remember still haven’t played their First Round game against Histon) and Andy Hessenthaler's Dover Athletic, who both already face tough Second Round ties, could then face daunting - yet extremely challenging and financially rewarding - trips in the Third Round to face two sides challenging for promotion to the Coca Cola League.

For Hume the position is confusing.  Should the Stones beat Histon, they then travel to face Blue Square Premier side Salisbury City and if they get through that tie too, Hume could then be taking his side to Cambridge United in Round Three, to bring back memories of the two sides meeting almost 20 years agoin the Football League Play Offs, if Cambridge beat fellow Blue Square Premier side Eastbourne Borough in their Second Round tie.

For Hessenthaler and Dover, whilst the picture is slightly clearer, it could be argued that it is even more daunting.

For if the Whites survive their long trip to Fleetwood Town, they then travel again to face either Blue Square Premier leaders Stevenage Borough or Vauxhall Motors, who are currently bottom of Blue Square North.
