FA Carlsberg Vase: Third Round Draw - We want to reach the national stage, says Wells boss Larkin
Monday 15th November 2010
TUNBRIDGE WELLS boss Martin Larkin says he is targeting the national stages of the FA Carlsberg Vase, having been drawn away to Leverstock Green in the Third Round on 4 December, writes Stephen McCartney. The Hemel Hempstead based side are presently in 12th place in the Spartan South Midlands League with a playing record of 7 wins and 4 draws from 17 league games.
The Wells recorded their highest ever FA Carlsberg Vase victory with an emphatic 8-0 victory over Hellenic League Division One East side Holyport at Culverden Stadium at the weekend and Larkin, who was speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk wants his side to progress further
“We want to be involved in (the fourth round) in January, that’s the key to it,” said Larkin.
“We’re not talking about going to Wembley or anything like that.
“To be honest the lads want to get to where it goes into a national round because they want a little cheeky away day in Newcastle somewhere for a night out.
“We just want to take it as far as we can go. It’s nice to go into the new year in the Vase, that is something that will make all those hard days in January, getting your fitness back after Christmas, making sure that’s something to aim for.”
Larkin revealed that THIRTEEN of his sixteen man squad that demolished Holyport all live in Tunbridge Wells.
Michal Czanner, Jason Bourne, Alex Rich, Sam Phillips, Andy Boyle, Jon Pilbeam, Drew Crush, Carl Cornell, Andy McMath, Steve Ashmore, Ben Palmer, Jack Harris and Callum Hampson all live in the town, with Scot Whibley and Keelan Mooney residing in Maidstone and Rob Wells commuting from Orpington.
“When I took over, when you haven’t got a budget, that’s what you need to do,” said Hove resident Larkin.
“None of the players get paid so you get everyone tight as a group. It’s easier to do that if you all live local.
“We’re not interested in superstars who want to come down and get some cash. There’s a couple of lads in the Ryman League that live in Tunbridge Wells who were also looking at as we want to improve week in week out and it’s important we do that.
“Ramsgate had a fantastic journey over four or five years (with Thanet based players that swiftly took them up from the Kent League into the Ryman Premier League play-off’s) and we’re hoping we can do the same thing.”
