FA Cup run will bring a bit of glory to the boys, says VCD assistant Andy Silk

VCD ATHLETIC assistant manager Andy Silk says it’s important for his side to bounce back from their derby defeat at Erith Town last Monday, especially with  prize money at stake for the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round home tie against Bookham on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.

The winning club will bank a much-needed £750 from sponsors Budweiser and will also earn a trip to either Mole Valley SCR of Kent League rivals Lordswood in the Preliminary Round on 3 September.

Vickers are favourites to knock Bookham out of the competition, especially as the Dorking based side play in the first division of the Combined Counties League – one level below the Crayford outfit.

Bookham have picked up just one point from their first three league games.

“Two games in, you just look for a reaction,” said Silk, 38.

“I think there’s quite a bit of money for every round, but on the playing side it’s just a bit of glory for the boys.”

Hythe Town became the first Kent League club to reach the first round of the FA Cup for 53 years when they were defeated 5-1 at League Two side Hereford United last November.

And Silk wants his club to enjoy a run in this year’s competition.

He said: “I think you’d settle for the second or third qualifying round.  What Hythe done was unbelievable!

“Can they (VCD) get into the first round? Maybe.

“Can they (VCD) get a little bit further on in the qualifying rounds and again, you may draw a big team, big crowd.  You never know.  It would be nice!”
